Fort Casey, Whidbey Island, WA, Cougar’s First Outing

For our first adventure in our 2023 Keystone Cougar we spent two nights up at Fort Casey on Whidbey Island. This is our fourth or fifth time camping here, and this time was special. Besides it being our first time in the new trailer, the weather was outstanding for April. It was 65 to 70° for both days, no rain and not much wind.
We spent our first day, just enjoying the warm weather and the beauty of our surroundings, close to the Coupeville/Port Townsend ferry right on the water. We took a long walk past the huge cannons, up to the lighthouse and back along the beach. As we walked back along the beach we saw several sea lions just offshore feeding on salmon.
We had a campfire both nights and it was just nice to spend so much time outdoors.
We collected a lot of white rocks on the beach. We met a nice couple from Freeland just down the road from Fort Casey. They grew up in Bothell and Kirkland not far from us. They had an Oliver trailer. Super nice, similar to an Airstream, but all fiberglass.
We tested out our new trailer. Everything worked great although we have to figure out the best way to use the on-demand hot water heater. I think it needs some adjustment because it kept switching from hot to cold, which would not work very well for a shower.
One of our motivations for purchasing it was to have a bed that was North-South instead of East-West, so that you don’t have to climb over each other in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Ironically, the first night Karen and I both slept through the night!
It is so roomy and comfortable. We think it’s going to work well for many years to come.
Can’t wait to come back to Fort Casey again and maybe stay a little longer next time.
