Maui – 2026

We arrived after dark after a full travel day on 4/6/26. Ashley and Tim rented a large ground floor condo on Maui in Ka’anapali called the Honua Kai.  It was such a beautiful place with lush vegetation, several pools and hot tubs, a water slide, walking distance to the boardwalk, the beach and Duke's restaurant and bar.

The weather was very rainy and stormy, but not as bad as the prognasticators had guessed.  It was still about 80º every day, and mornings were mostly rain free.  We still managed to get sunburned even with 30 and 50 sunscreen.  We never got the thunderstorms that were predicted, but had one day of high winds.  It drizzled off and on but it was still 30º warmer than the Pacific NW this time of year.

We feel like we made the most of this vacation, despite the unusually wet weather.

We made some great memories there.  Here are some of the highlights:

  • Played in the ocean and saw some sea turtles
  • Took long walks along the beach
  • Played with the grand kids in the pools every day
  • Kicked the soccer ball and played catch with Patrick several times
  • Ate shaved ice at the Big Wave shaved ice company
  • Taught Patrick how to play cribbage
  • Played the Monopoly card game, a quicker version than the board game
  • Drove through Lahaina, so sad to see the destruction from the fire

Most of our meals we ate in as we had a full kitchen at the condo.  The grocery store food was literally twice as expensive as the food back home.  We spent $500 at the grocery store the first day for the six of us, and that food lasted almost the entire week.  We spent another $100 near the end of the week for a few more staples, eggs and such, but by the time we left, we finished almost everything in the fridge.

We ordered out three times from the Fish Market.  Their Baja fish taco's were really good as were there fresh fish sandwiches and burritos.  The also had a Pok'e salad with ahi that was fantastic!

Our last night we had an early 4pm dinner at Duke's, not affiliated with the Duke's in the Seattle area, but very good just the same.  It was a fantastic meal.  Karen had the seared Ahi and I had the prime rib, mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables.  Ashley and Tim had the fresh fish, Mahi Mahi, which they really liked.

We got up at 4am on 4/13 Hawaii time and arrived back home at 7pm PDT.  It was a full day of travel by car, plane, light rail and Lyft, thankful to be safely back home.

Despite the weather, God shined on us all week.  What a wonderful time we had with Ashley & Tim's family.  We are so grateful for being invited. The memories we created will be with us forever!
