Pioneer Trails RV Park – Anacortes, WA
We arrived in Anacortes on Tuesday, August 26th. It was 82° and a little bit smokey from the fires in British Columbia pushing down through the Fraser River Valley.
It was our first time at Pioneer Trails. Our site, C-12, was spacious and heavily treed. It was a very nice RV park, with lots of space in between the campsites. It felt more like a state park.
There were a few covered wagons here and there. Apparently people used to be able to sleep in them for the experience, but now they are just for decoration.
Whidbey Island naval base was close by, so we were buzzed by fighter jets periodically, but it was more fun than a nuisance.
On Wednesday, August 26, we walked our bikes onto the ferry for Lopez Island and had the most amazing bike ride! We rode on the streets, straddling the white line, but once you got away from the ferry landing, there were very few cars. The views were sensational, especially Shark Reef Point, Agate Beach, and Iceberg Point. We rode the winding roads that took us along the bays, along spacious farmland and deep into the woods, stopping periodically to double check our old school paper map, no GPS or cell service to speak of. We stopped at a coffee shop in Lopez Village in the morning as it was a bit chilly. In the afternoon, the sun came out and we ate lunch at Setsunai, a restaurant that specializes in Ramen noodles, taken to the next level.
While camping in Anacortes we also:
- Played the card game Swipe outdoors at the picnic table, sandwiched between by the fire pit and Bernie and Ellen’s propane “gas buddy”. We stayed toasty warm.
- Enjoyed each other's company and shared stories by the campfire until long after dark
- Ate delicious Coffee & Oreo ice cream at the Mad Hatters. Talked with the owner for a long time to hear the history of how this little ice cream shop came into being
- Rode bikes in Washington Park
- Ate lunch at Frida's Mexican Restaurant
- Sat under the cover of our awning close to the firepit during the first rain event in a very long time
- Karen and Ellen spent an afternoon thrifting while Bernie and I went for a long walk along the Anacortes waterfront
- Enjoyed Vickie and Chris's company for an afternoon and evening
- Played Corn-hole using a set owned by one of the manager's of the RV park
