Oregon Coast – Spring 2025
On Sunday, June 15th, Father's Day, we got up early and left the house about 6:30am to begin our journey to South Beach State Park in Newport, Oregon.
Ellen and Bernie were traveling from their home in Arizona to spend the summer in the Pacific Northwest.
We both arrived in the afternoon to sunny weather, but very windy. The good news, no mosquitos!
While we were there, we:
- Took several bike rides on the various trails in and around the park, many with fantastic views of the ocean
- Ate breakfast at the Newport Cafe
- Walked on the beach
- Watched some glorious beach sunsets
- Played cards, swipe and cribbage
On Wednesday, June 18th, we drove to Gearhart, Oregon, near Seaside, and stayed at Bud's RV Park.
On the way, we had a delicious lunch at a hole-in-the-wall fish and chip shop, across the street from the Tillamook Cheese Factory. The Cod and chips, Salmon and chips and Clam Chowder in a bread bowl were all delicious.
While in Gearhart, we:
- Traipsed up the 160+ stairs to the top of the Astoria Column and tossed our $1 balsa wood airplanes off the top. Mine circled for quite a while before landing at the top of a tall tree, quite a ways down
- Walked on the beach
- Visited Seaside and walked through the shops
- Enjoyed some delicious meals, including lunch at Mo's
- Played more card games in the evenings and generally enjoyed each other's company
On Friday, the day before we left, I got a call from James. They were transferring Mom from the Adult Family Home to Hospice at Evergreen, saying that her time on earth was coming to an end. We decided to wait until Saturday morning to drive back. We got up at 5:30am and made the 5 hour drive through heavy rain and rough traffic.
We dropped the trailer off at home and arrived at hospice at 1pm. Mom passed at 1:40pm. We were so grateful to have made it in time to say our tearful goodbyes. She went peacefully. God is merciful!
Vickie shared with me Mom's conversation with God (and Chris) the day before she passed. I've included it in the photos below.
